Cuisines of Tripura is the type of food served in there. A state in the north-eastern part of India is covered by lushed mountains and watery rivers give the native nonvegetarian a good amount of flesh for their meal. Tripura in it has two children one the Tribals and the other is the Bengalis. Both have a somethings in common and one of them is the meal. As the people are essentially nonvegetarian so they share the main course made of meat with some vegetables on it. The traditional cuisine of Tripura is known as Mui Borok. The traditional Tripura dishes have a key ingredient Berma also known as shidal in Bengali. This is a small, oil-pasted and fermented fish. The food here is delicious with mouth watery flavors and on top of that, it’s healthy because the use of oil and spices are nullified while the making of there delightful dishes. Some of the common Tripura food which is famous in and out of the state is Bangui rice and fish stews, Muya (Bamboo shoot), local fishes, vegetables, herbs, Batema, wahan moso, and roasted meat. Details of some dishes I want to share with you.
The first and the most common cuisines of Tripura is Batema, so this is a jelly-like food prepared by making a paste of Batema’s plant corm or tuber (Elephant foot yam) with sodium powder and water to remove its raphide. After making the paste into bun-shaped, they are boiled with water containing sodium powder. Since lack of sodium powder causes the throat to itch, they are cut into pieces and preferred with fresh pasted garlic and Mosdeng.
The second one is the wahan moso. This is a dish prepared by adding boiled pork, onion pieces, salt, pasted ginger, and roasted green chili paste. This all mixes well in the stove to give your mouth the world’s best experience.
There is some traditional food specially cooked and served in Tripura. If I count the major ones then they are Chakhwi, Mwkhwi, and Mwitru. And there are some drinks for the tribals to sip while enjoying the festive moments. The two major drinks in Tripura are Chuak and Brandy.
Now firstly writing about Chakhwi, this is also known as bamboo shoot curry. Chakhwi has it’s two versions one for the veg-eaters and the other for the non-veg eaters. This is the best of all and the one who has ever tasted it will never forget the flavor and texture of this savory dish. This has a specialty of being adopted by all also by the Bengalis residing in Tripura. Like the other dishes, the non-veg version of Chakhwi is cooked with Berma. Though the odor of Berma is not so decent when cooked it will make you forget the taste of the best dishes you ate before. The dish becomes mouth-watering and acts as an appetizer for the Tripuri people. Now talking about the ingredient in the veg version of this dish it comprises Bamboo shoot, Green Papaya, and verities of lentil. So with these few things, we get a dish that is not spicy, healthy but a delicious meal.
Muitru another dish coming from the hills is again completely non-veg cuisines of Tripura and yes it is relished by the other Bengali families too. Simple to cook but needs a master’s degree for gaining the perfection level. The ingredients are bamboo shoots which are cut in pieces and especially the tender part of the shoot is chosen for this dish to get made. The other main ingredients are berma, green chili and garlic. Though while the making of the dish you may face an awful smell but when it’s cooked you will get a feeling of eating a heavenly dish. You will taste a spicy dish without having any spice on it.
Mwkhwi is a dish to give an end to all other dishes on your plate. It is a sweet dish served after those breathtaking dishes. It will again blow your mind with its amazing texture and flavor and on top of all these here you are eating all fat-free foods. Various Mwkhwi I want to list here are Thentrwi mwkhwi, Thaiplo mwkhwi, Belphui Mwkhwi and many more for you.
Now speaking about the drinks Chauk is the traditional Tripuri rice beer popular over the entire northeastern part. It is made by fermenting rice in water. It is especially drunk on ritual occasions to give the public an open heart space. Brandy a well-known spirit is also popular in the region of Tripura. Brandy generally contains 35-60% alcohol and is drunk on occasions after completing the full coarse meal.
So this is a little information about the tastes and cuisines of Tripura. If I give an overview for all the cuisines they are oil and spice free but have a flavorful and delighting taste with no harm to your health. Rather I would like to advise you to have it because they may even make your health better than before. I agree with the fact that it may be awful while cooking them but yes this awful turns into a wonderful cuisine.
