Mysore originates from the name Mahishasura, a demon who could take the form of human as well as a buffalo, known as the strongest evil force and could not be defeated by any God, which led Goddess Parvathy to take form of Durga, the ultimate Shakthi and slay the demon. In honor of this, there is a chamundeshwari temple in the Chamundi hills of Mysore. This led to the name Mahishapura which was later colonized to Mysore.
Kingdom of Mysuru was known to be one of the strongest after the annexation of the Vijayanagara Empire, which it was first a part of; but after the battle of Talikota, Mysore formed a kingdom of its own led by Narasarja Wodeyar. It went on to take over large parts of South India and became a strong Kingdom and reached the peak of its dominance when in the later 18th Century it was taken over by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, they wanted to remove all signs of the Wodeyar dynasty and they did so too, they wanted the people to remember their reign. Then started the 4 Anglo-Mysore wars it was against various dynasties and the British; the British waging war with everyone to conquer India as a whole. 4th Anglo-Mysore war ended Tipu Sultan’s dynasty and the British ruled us, rest is history known to us. The Wodeyars were given their ultimate position and made puppet monarchs under the British rule; after independence, the state of Mysore became part of Karnataka state and is now a beautiful city itself.
